Corona Virus: Germans Have Problems With Masks Than Swiss

Due to Corona, masks are mandatory on planes taking off or landing in Germany. But not with the Swiss, Swiss law applies across the board.

More recently, a photograph of Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Economics Minister Robert Habeck caused a stir in Germany. Because two politicians flew into the government machine without masks. In Germany, however, it is still mandatory to wear it on planes, buses and trains. The chancellor justified himself by saying that the rule did not apply to government aircraft as everyone present there had been tested for corona.

The requirement to wear a mask actually applies to all aircraft taking off or landing in Germany. Indeed, because according to the “Focus” report, the airline Swiss is not sticking to it. Or as the magazine writes: “From the German point of view, it’s illegal, but the Swiss don’t care.”

The article quotes a tweet by the editor-in-chief of “NZZ Germany”. Nine out of ten passengers on the Zurich to Berlin flight will not be wearing a mask. However, the “masked minority” was treated with respect, writes Marc Felix Serrao.

A spokesman for the Interior Ministry confirmed that the German Infection Protection Act applies to aircraft taking off or landing in Germany. This means everyone in air transport must wear a mask, she explains to “Focus.” “The mask requirement applies – of course to the Swiss airline as well.”

You see it a little differently in Swiss. A spokesperson says the mask requirement only applies to flights to Singapore and India. “Our aircraft are registered in Switzerland, so Swiss law also applies on board.”
